Project Description
Constructed in 1932 as a combination athletic facility and designed in the art deco style of architecture, Hinchcliffe Stadium stands today as a National Historic Landmark. Hinchcliffe Stadium was the historic home of Negro League Baseball teams the New York Black Yankees, the New York Cubans and others. Hinchcliffe was also home to four professional football teams; boxing matches; motorcycle and car racing; rodeos; concerts; comedy shows; and the first telecast athletic event in the State of New Jersey. It has a history rich with important individuals and events from America’s athletics and entertainment industries. Falling into disrepair, it was closed in 1997. From 1997 to 2021 it was allowed to decay to the point of requiring a complete restoration, major rehabilitation and partial reconstruction.
MPG was engaged to complete the restoration and rehabilitation of the cast in place concrete and masonry structure. Over a two-year period, MPG tore into the eroding stadium completing a significant structural intervention scope of work including: Historic masonry repair and cleaning; full and partial depth concrete repair; wholesale replacement of sections of the cast in place concrete grandstands; joint sealants replacement; and the application of waterproofing coatings over all of the vertical and horizontal concrete and masonry surfaces.
Now resurrected and looking fresh, Hinchcliffe Stadium reopened in 2023. It is an active sports and entertainment venue which provides an important economic resource for the community in which it serves, while preserving history and standing as a testament to American spirit.
